Moving house with a piano

Moving house? The piano is scheduled as a move of its own, on its own date. Many choose to bring it last, once the home is settled and its corner is clear and ready. That way placement is quick, and the piano goes straight to the spot that has been waiting for it. A move within the same building, from floor to floor, is planned with the same care.

Preparing your home

Before the big day, choose a spot for the piano by an interior wall, away from a sunny window, from the air conditioning draft and from the path between door and window. Measure the corner and clear a path from the door to the spot. On the day itself, a flexible time window helps, since movers combine several moves in one day.

How to get a quote

Send us the type of piano (upright or grand), the pickup and delivery addresses, the floor and whether there is a lift or stairs at each end, a short photo of the entrance, and an approximate date. From there we build a quote that fits your move exactly.

How a piano makes the journey

An upright piano is wrapped in thick blankets and rolled on a moving dolly to the truck. With a grand piano, the legs and pedal lyre are removed first, each part is wrapped separately, and the body is stood on its side. In the truck the piano is covered and strapped to the wall, so it travels steadily the whole way.

At the destination the movers remove the wrapping, place the piano where you chose, and on a grand piano reattach the legs and pedal lyre.

What determines the price

The type of piano. An upright usually weighs a hundred kilos or more, and a grand can reach several hundred. A grand travels on its side, with the legs and pedal lyre removed and wrapped separately, and it also takes up more room in the truck. That is why it gets its own team and preparation.

Floor and access. Movers count floors by the number of stairs on the way, at pickup and at delivery. A lift that fits the piano's dimensions changes the picture: professional piano movers stand a piano on its side to fit it in. When a building calls for a crane, it is arranged in advance. The crane is priced by working hours and needs a place for its truck to stand beside the building.

Distance and timing. A move within the city, between cities or to the far end of the country is part of the quote from the start. A flexible date lets us fit the move into an existing route, which works in your favour on price. A move at a special hour, on a holiday eve or at the weekend is planned separately.

Once the piano is home

The piano settles into its new home, and one to two weeks after arrival is the time to book a tuning. Tuning is done in your home and takes two to three and a half hours, depending on the piano. To arrange: book a tuning.
