The exact size for your home
Piano sizes help you understand what will fit at home, and then you come to play at the Zohar Pianos store and gallery, 28 Ben Atar. An upright is measured mainly by height, a grand by length, and in both the width is almost always similar.
A few simple numbers, a tape measure and a photo of the room - and you can already picture the piano in place.
Grand piano
A grand is measured from the keys to the tip of the tail, and it is about a metre and a half wide. A baby grand reaches up to about 1.70 metres, a medium grand of 1.70 to 1.80 metres is a favourite in homes, and professional grands of about 1.80 to 2.25 metres suit large rooms and halls. Add about half a metre for seating and space to walk around. Ceiling height plays a part too, since a grand's sound fills the whole volume of the room. More on this: how to choose a grand piano.
Upright piano
Most uprights are about 1.46 to 1.54 metres wide, since they all have 88 keys. The main difference is in height:
- Compact - up to about 1.14 metres, for a niche or a small room.
- Medium - about 1.15 to 1.20 metres, for most rooms.
- Tall - about 1.21 to 1.29 metres, full sound for the living room.
- Very tall - from about 1.30 metres and up, an especially deep, rich sound.
A taller piano gets longer strings and a larger soundboard, and so a fuller, deeper sound, while taking up almost the same floor space. For example, the Yamaha U1 is about 121 cm tall and the U3 about 131 cm.
The height of the keyboard from the floor is almost identical on all pianos, so the seating feels familiar at any height. In front of the piano, add about half a metre for the bench and the player. More on this: low or tall upright.
Digital piano
A digital piano with 88 keys is about 1.30 to 1.45 metres wide, and much shallower than an acoustic piano. It suits a small corner, a child's room and playing on headphones. Digital pianos.
How much space in practice
Upright: about a metre and a half along the wall, plus about half a metre in front for the bench. If the piano goes into a niche, measure the niche height too, including room to open the top lid.
A 1.70 metre grand: about a metre and a half wide, and about 2.20 metres long including seating, plus room to walk around.
On the way in: an upright usually passes through a standard door and fits into a lift standing on its side. A grand travels on its side, with the legs and pedals removed. Every piano move we do is fully insured from start to finish with comprehensive coverage, at no extra cost - so you are covered, protected and completely at ease.
Size and sound
Size affects the sound too. When a piano is taller or longer, the strings are longer and the soundboard wider, and the bass gains depth. That is why the size is matched to the room: a compact piano sounds refined in a small room, and a tall upright or a grand fills a wide living room. The most accurate way to know is to play several sizes one after another.
What to send us
Measurements of the door and hallway, the width and depth of the lift or the number of stairs, and a photo of the room with the spot you chose. Mention the ceiling height too if you are dreaming of a grand. Together we will work out whether a low upright, a tall upright or a grand feels right for the space, and plan the move accordingly.
