A grand piano in the living room, a dream come true

A grand piano in an apartment is a dream that comes true in many homes in Israel. All it takes is a little planning ahead: a spot in the room, a way in, and playing hours that suit your home and your neighbours. Zohar Pianos accompanies you at every stage - from measuring, through playing at the store and gallery, to placement at home.

A grand piano transforms a room, and the rhythm of playing at home too. It gives an open sound rising from a large soundboard, a touch that responds to every nuance, and a presence that turns a living room into a music room.

Where to place it in the room

A grand piano sounds especially beautiful when its straight side, the bass side, runs parallel to an interior wall, and an angle of 50 to 60 degrees also works very well. That way the open lid directs the sound into the room, and the player sits facing the space and the guests.

Keeping it away from a sunny window, the air conditioning draft and the path between door and window protects the wood and the tuning. A single hand clap in the room hints at the acoustics: rugs, curtains and a soft sofa soften the sound, while large windows and a stone floor reflect it. Much of a grand's sound also travels downward, so a rug beneath the piano refines it beautifully in rooms with stone floors and high ceilings.

How much space you need

A grand piano is measured from the keys to the tip of the tail, and the width is similar on almost all grands, about a metre and a half. Add about half a metre for the bench and seating, and pleasant space to walk around. A baby grand reaches up to about 1.70 metres, and grands of 1.70 to 1.80 metres are the favourite choice for homes and piano teachers.

Consider the ceiling height too, since a grand's sound fills the whole volume of the room, not just the floor. A high ceiling gives the sound space, and a compact grand also feels excellent in a room of standard height. A well-known rule of thumb says the room's area in square metres should be roughly ten times the grand's length in metres - a 1.80 metre grand suits a room of about 18 m². This is a starting point, and the ear decides, so we would love you to play a few lengths before deciding.

The way in

Measure the front door, the hallway and the corners on the way to the room, and check the lift or stairs. A grand travels on its side, with the legs and pedal lyre removed and wrapped separately, so it fits into many homes through a standard door and hallway, even in city apartment buildings. When a building calls for a crane, it is arranged in advance. Send us measurements and photos, and we will plan the move together.

Every piano move we do is fully insured from start to finish with comprehensive coverage, at no extra cost - so you are covered, protected and completely at ease.

Playing hours and neighbours

An acoustic grand suits a home where playing happens during the day and early evening, and a lid raised on the short prop gives a lovely balance between full sound and a domestic room. For those who also practise at night, a digital piano or an upright with a Silent system allows playing on headphones. More on this: silent piano · a piano for an apartment.

After placement

At the destination the legs and pedal lyre are reattached, and the grand is placed where you chose. The piano settles into its new home, and one to two weeks after arrival a tuning is arranged in your home. Stable humidity of about 40%-50% and tuning, usually once a year, protect the sound for years.
