Precise sound, in your own home
How much does piano tuning cost at Zohar Pianos? The price depends on your piano - upright or grand - its location, and what it needs right now. Tuning is done in your home, anywhere in Israel. A few details by phone or WhatsApp, and you will receive an exact quote.
What determines the price
The type of piano. Uprights and grands differ in size and construction, which affects the length of the visit. A tuning visit takes two to three and a half hours, depending on the piano.
Location and timing. We travel throughout Israel, and the city and travel are part of scheduling. Visits are planned by region, so a flexible date fits easily into the schedule. A visit at a special hour or on a specific date is arranged separately.
What the piano needs. A piano tuned regularly, a piano after a move, or a piano that has waited a while for tuning - each has its own scope. If the piano also needs work on the action or restoration, we will tell you in advance. Repairs and restoration are done in your home.
Before the visit
A few small things help the visit flow: clear photos, vases and sheet music off the piano, and leave free access around it. If you have noticed anything - a key that responds differently, a pedal, or a note that has drifted - tell us when you book, so we arrive prepared. Regular tuning also looks after the action and the felts, and lets us catch early any small thing the piano is asking for.
After a move
Every piano move we do is fully insured from start to finish with comprehensive coverage, at no extra cost. After a move the piano settles into its new home, and one to two weeks after arrival is the time to book a tuning. That way the tuning sits on a piano that has already settled, and the sound stays stable over time.
Why a piano drifts out of tune
A piano has around 230 strings: three per note for most notes, and two or one in the bass. Every string is held under great tension. The soundboard is made of wood that responds to the air in your home: in humid summer the wood swells and the pitch rises slightly, and in dry winter it contracts and the pitch drops. This is entirely natural, and it is why a piano needs tuning even when it is played only a little. A regularly tuned piano keeps a stable sound that is pleasing to the ear, and a joy to sit down and play every day.
Most pianos are tuned once a year, and some choose twice when the piano is played a lot. Stable humidity of about 40%-50% helps the tuning hold, as does a spot by an interior wall, away from a sunny window and the air conditioning draft. More on this: care and humidity.
When a piano asks for tuning
A piano drifts out of tune gradually and gently, so timely tuning immediately restores the clarity and precision you love. There are a few natural moments to tune: a year after the last tuning, after a move, after a period when the piano has rested from playing, when the piano teacher recommends it, or simply when your ear senses the sound has shifted. A new piano, or one after restoration, usually benefits from more frequent tuning in its first year, until the strings settle.
