White Piano: Finishes, Colours and How They Fit Your Home

A white piano brings a full sound and a bright look into the home, and it blends beautifully into a modern living room, a sunlit space or a home styled in natural tones. Alongside classic black, today you will find pianos in glossy white and satin white, in wood tones and even with a transparent body. This guide explains what sets the finishes apart, how each one fits into a home, and how to keep it looking its best for years.

Types of finish: gloss, satin and wood

A gloss finish, also called polish, reflects light and images like a mirror and brings out the lines of the piano. A satin finish reflects light without a reflection, giving a soft, understated look. A wood finish, such as walnut or mahogany, shows the natural grain and adds warmth. Most pianos from Japan and Europe carry a polyester finish, a durable material that stands up well to scratches and stays beautiful with simple cleaning. Some American pianos use lacquer, a softer coat with a deep shine, which is why it is also chosen for luxury instruments. The finish sets the look, while the sound is created by the hammers, the strings and the soundboard, as explained in our guide how a piano works.

A white piano at home

Glossy white returns the light from the window and brightens the corner where it stands. It suits pale walls, a floor in a natural tone and a modern or Scandinavian style home. Satin white is more understated and blends with textiles, light wood and plants. In a small room a white piano looks lighter than a dark piano of the same size, and the size itself can be planned with our size guide.

On display in our gallery is the Alexian Solis upright in satin white, and among the digital pianos the Alexian F5100 in white and the Alexian F588 in white, both supplied with a matching chair. For events, the Alexian digital grand piano in white is available for rental, exclusive to Zohar Pianos. More about the brand in our guide Alexian.

Black, wood and special finishes

Glossy black is the finish familiar from concert stages, and it looks impressive in any room. A wood finish suits a home with parquet, bookshelves and wooden pieces, like the Yamaha U5 upright in deep walnut, 153 cm wide and 131 cm high. For those who love a striking design, the Alexian Lumina grand piano with a crystal body and a cast iron frame comes in two sizes, 153 cm and 173 cm. The Alexian F5100 in polish also brings the shine of a gloss finish to a digital piano.

Caring for the finish

A beautiful finish is kept mostly by simple cleaning. Remove dust with a feather duster or a soft cotton cloth, lightly damp, and dry right away with a dry cloth. Wipe in long straight strokes, and on a satin finish follow the direction of its lines. A satin finish stays beautiful when it is simply clean, and piano polish is kept for gloss finishes only. For every finish choose products made for pianos, and talk to us before using wax or polish. A shaded spot, away from direct sunlight, keeps the colour for years, especially white. Our padded upright cover protects the finish between sessions, and more on this in our guides piano cover and care and humidity.

The sound is created by the hammers, the strings and the soundboard, and the finish sets the look. So you choose the colour for your home and the sound for the model.

What is the difference between polish and satin?

Polish reflects light and images like a mirror. Satin reflects light without a reflection, and stays beautiful with simple cleaning with a soft cloth.

How do I care for a white piano?
